The Little Things

The Little Things

“... and the wounded child
navigating an overwhelming world
may seek refuge in a smaller world;
the comfort in minutiae, the tenderness in detail ”
- Linda Haigh

We have all been faced with multiple catastrophic events and enforced isolation over the last few years, resulting in our worlds growing smaller and smaller. When navigating an overwhelming and traumatising world, we seek refuge in the comfort of minutiae and the tenderness of the little things. When we are forced to slow down, to take notice of our immediate environment, to retreat into a smaller world, we discover new interests and unexpected delights in the familiar and find that what is most valuable and important to us changes significantly.

The Little Things is a personal journey, documenting through photographs the little things I noticed - sometimes for the first time, the things I appreciated, took refuge in, was comforted by and that brought me joy.

There were so many beautiful little things I’d overlooked and never taken the time to notice before. Like the trails starfish leave in the sand as they move around. Or the softness and delicate beauty of a flannel flower. The feel of leaves crunching under my bare feet. The way raindrops captured in succulent hearts look like jewels.

I started to see things in a different light, to ask questions and really consider what mattered. I found a new and deep sense of connection, belonging and peace with being present in my immediate surrounds and in living a simpler life. How fast does a forest’s heart beat? Once a year maybe? Why are we always so busy rushing around? How can we become more like the trees?

Audience participation: invite

I would like to invite you to reflect on what became important to you. How did your world change as your focus narrowed? What helped you feel grounded, peaceful and connected? What did you appreciate more? What did you notice and appreciate that you perhaps hadn’t really thought much of previously? What did you find beautiful and peaceful amid the chaos?

Use the hashtag #TheLittleThings2022 on Instagram to post a comment or photo in response. Your response will display on the screen in real time! Or you may prefer to write a reflection on a post-it note and put it on the wall.
